The Ultimate Postpartum Style Guide: Part 1

postpartum fashion style outfits what to wear after having a baby maternity fashion luminary mothers motherhood fashion style bumpsuit

What do you wear after bringing your baby (or babies!) home? What do you wear for the first walk outside? What do you wear for the first coffee or lunch out? What do you wear for the first time you introduce your little one to family or friends?

Comfort is absolutely key during this period, but what my experience taught me is that looking great can help you feel more like yourself and confident during this amazing yet a little nerve-racking and exhausting time. My first tip, is if you can, have outfits prepared in advance in your wardrobe. You don’t have to have many, even 2 or 3 will do. But having those outfits ready, will make you feel better, and make things easier later down the line. Either way, you’ve got this mama!

The Versatile Jacket

What made me so much more confident postpartum when dressing was a great jacket. I favoured slightly longer, slightly oversized jackets or blazers. I didn’t feel comfortable wearing anything too tight or restrictive, and I found myself getting warm very quickly and needing to bend down or move around a lot to pick up the baby. My oversized leather jacket really came in handy as well as a handful of oversized blazers I had in my closet. A high-quality, well-made jacket with good structure works really well postpartum, because you can just throw it over a nursing bra or a t-shirt and leggings, and you feel comfortable and chic, which really gives you a little boost, especially after a few sleepless nights. If you need some ideas, below are some great options that I highly recommend:

Mango Zipper cotton jacket £79.99

The Everyday Tops

When it comes to tops postpartum, keep it simple! What you’ll notice after giving birth is that you will end up changing your top more often than you expect during the day. Your body temperature changes a lot, you sweat a lot more, and if you breastfeed, you’ll need a suitable top, and generally, there are a lot of stains happening during this time. So starting with a great leakproof nursing bra or camis is a great option, and go with relaxed t-shirts and oversized button shirts. I lived in oversized COS t-shirts, a few Levi’s western shirts with easy-popping buttons and oversized linen button shirts that kept me cool. If you need some ideas, below are some great options that I highly recommend:

Agolde Lotta Denim Shirt £300
Levi's Teodora Western Shirt £75

Have those three on rotation, and wear them with a simple t-shirt or button shirt, and a great jacket and you will be looking chic and comfortable. What should you look for in a diaper bag? There are a few factors we recommend considering before you settle on a bag. You might even discover that you already have a suitable diaper bag in your wardrobe!
